Yogiraj believes himself to be the most compassionate and caring of all individuals and is displeased when Jatashankar informs him that Ayodhya's Dharamdas is better than he can ever be. The latter then sets about to test Dharamdas and ensure if he is better than Yogiraj. He comes to know that he s and his wife, Meera, are childless, and convinces the latter to sacrifice a baby goat so that she can bear a child but Dharamdas is able to foil this and severely admonishes Meera. Then the couple adopt a grown orphan, Jamuna, and let her live with them. With Yogiraj's help Meera is able to conceive and soon gives birth to a baby boy who they name Prabhudas. Then her world will be changed drastically when folks in the community inform her that Dharamdas is having an affair with Kalavati, a courtesan. Unable to bear the shock, she falls down, is unable to regain her senses and is believed to be dead.

Hailing from a small village, Muthuraj aspires to be a great actor someday. He goes to the city to pursue his dreams and gets the role of a junior artist. His diligence gets him into the good books of an assistant director who casts him as lead in his new film. But the lead actress leaves the project when she discovers this. Or is this the real reason? A routine story, the tale begins with the life of Muthuraj (puneet) whose only aim in life is to become a great actor. With this, he comes out of his village and goes to the city in search of good offers. Soon, he finds the offer of a junior artist and then, one of the associate directors realizes his potential and decides to cast him as the hero. However, trouble arises when the leading lady Parvathi (Priyanka Kothari) walks out of the project. Realizing that his career would be at stake, Muthuraj decides to convince Parvathy and she has her own set of problems with her relatives who are linked to the underworld. What happens from there forms the rest of the story.

It is a Hindu mythological film directed by Vijay, and based on the tale of Prahalada. The film stars Rajkumar, Saritha, Puneeth Rajkumar and Ananth Nag. The soundtrack was composed by T. G. Lingappa. The film won State Film Awards in Sound recording and cinematography categories. This was the fourth Kannada film on Prahlada after the 1942 film Bhakta Prahlada, the 1958 film Bhakta Prahlada and the 1960 film Dashavathara. Of the four films, this was the only one which was not shot in black and white. This movie was dubbed in Telugu as Narasimhaavataaram.
